What is it and why is it so important?
Fire safety is the set of practices intended to reduce the destruction caused by fire. Fire safety measures include those that are intended to prevent ignition of an uncontrolled fire, and those that are used to limit the development and effects of a fire after it starts.
The risk of fire impacts on all work places. The Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 is the statutory instrument that places the responsibility on individuals within an organisation to carry out risk assessments to identify, manage and reduce the risk of fire.
Ask yourself some simple questions –
Do you know your responsibilities?
Are your policies appropriate and in place?
Do you have the correct processes and procedures in place?
Have you completed Risk assessments, and are they up to date?
A Fire risk assessment is a methodical examination at what, in your work activities and workplace, could cause harm to people from fire. It will help determine the chances of a fire occurring and the dangers from fire that the workplace poses for the people who use it.
As a responsible person you are responsible for identifying the hazards and risks and implementing the necessary mitigation.
Changes to the building, the work or workforce will require a review of the Risk Assessment as would an incident or near miss.
Training and Awareness
Making sure staff are suitably trained, ensuring they know what to do in the event of a fire, the equipment available, how to use it, and when is critical.
Providing guidance and training to keep them safe is not optional, it is a legal requirement as are regular fire drills and tests.
